sitemapA sitemap is an XML  file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL. Sitemaps are easiest way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. You can read more about sitemaps here.

If you are on WordPress then here is a plugin for you called Google XML Sitemaps which will easily generate a XML sitemap for your blog.

Google XML Sitemaps create a XML sitemap of your blog. It supports all the WordPress generated pages as well as custom ones. Everytime you edit or create a post, your sitemap is updated and all major search engines that support the sitemap protocol, like ASK.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO, are notified about the update.

That is indeed a good plugin to use. I also log in via Gmail (settings page) and then check what has been indexed and if there are any issues. I have added my blog there so it gives me all the details about indexed files.
