That is indeed a good plugin to use. I also log in via Gmail (settings page) and then check what has been indexed and if there are any issues. I have added my blog there so it gives me all the details about indexed files.

Google XML sitemap is one hell of plugin which is required for all the wordpress blog to help getting their blog indexed easily. I think you shouls also write a tutorial on how to submit sitemap.
