Many of my readers asked what is jailbreaking? How do we jailbreak? What is the purpose for jailbreaking? I would like to answer them all through this tutorial. Here we will learn how to jailbreak iPhone 4 and why people jailbreak all iDevices like iPad , iPhone and upcoming fourth generation iPod touch 4.
What is jailbreaking ?
Jailbreaking is modifying the iOS firmware running on a iDevice [iPhone,iPod touch,iPad] to allow it to run unsigned code in order to gain access to files that Apple wouldn’t normally allow you to . Jailbreaking will enable your device to install and run unofficial application installers to your phone , popular among them is Cydia .
Why do we jailbreak ?
As i have mentioned above , jailbreak allows you to install Cydia , an App Store like application installer. Cydia comes with numerous apps to run various applications like MyWi , which can turn you iPhone into a WiFi hotspot , and it can then work as a modem for third-party devices. Secondly , a jailbroken iPhone can virtually do anything you want it to do . A jailbroken iPhone can be unlocked using UltraSn0w ( an app that runs only on Cydia) , that allows you to choose your carrier. Forgot to mention that , iPhone’s usually comes locked to carrier’s in most countries. Factory unlocked iPhone are expensive deal. So people go for cheap factory locked iPhone and then jailbreak and unlock it to use with their service provider.

Hi Sourish, it was a nice article, but what i have to ask is , are there any side effects of JB an iPhone? I have heard, once a iDevice is JB’ed , its warrany will become null n void? is that so?
And first of all why jailbreak? Don’t we get apps from apple store rather than using third party software?
jailbreaking wont void tour phone . You must follow the restore if any trouble arises. Also cydia has lot more stuff than Apple Store … Cydia can turn your device to wifi hotsport any many more

I have a factory locked 3gs. I use BlackRa1n to jail break it which also unlocks it and i can use it with any carrier i like but i cant get cydia on my phone. I asked around and everyone tells me that once an iphone is jailbroken with Brackra1n, cydia automatically appears on the home screen but in my phone it does nt. Pls help.
