With iOS 10.3.1 download now released, the demanding release cycle that Apple has set themselves for updates continues. The latest update, although a minor one, does contain some features and fixes that will force some users to update to fix issues caused by iOS 10.3. If you haven’t already updated and you want to check out the linked article for more details.
Obviously, the update leads to another question – is there a jailbreak for iOS 10.3.1 ? The answer to that is no. For starters, the update is new and, as such, the jailbreak developers will need a reasonable amount of time to look at it and see what Apple has done, whether they have left any vulnerabilities that can be exploited. Second, as it is only a minor update, the likelihood of a jailbreak is slim, with the teams preferring to wait for a major release before burning any exploits they may have.
iOS 10 has seen a couple of jailbreaks, although not as many as previously. What we have had are not the jailbreaks we have come to know in the last few years. Yalu Jailbreak is the only utility we have for iOS 10 and it came to us from Luca Todesco, the iOS security researcher who always said he would never get involved in public jailbreaking . Given the lack of communication from the other teams, we are grateful to Todesco for coming through for the jailbreak community.
However, as some of you have found, Yalu is only supported on the 64-bit devices up to the last iPhone 6S/6S Plus model. Even iPhone 7 users have been left out this time, as well as those on older devices and that just goes to back up what Todesco warned us of – that iOS 10 is going to be a hard firmware to jailbreak. Apple promised that they would be stamping down on jailbreaking, despite it being ruled legal, and it looks like they may just be edging ahead in the long-running cat and mouse game.
Of course, that doesn’t mean they have won and, as we know from experience, jailbreak developers are somewhat tenacious when it comes to beating Apple and we have no doubt that, somewhere along the line, somebody will come up with an iOS 10.3.1 Jailbreak. We know it won’t come from Luca Todesco as he has announced he is stepping back.
