How to Generate XML Sitemap for a WordPress Blog

So you have created a WordPress blog and you want it to appear in all major search engines. To make it appear in search engines you must know about SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Sitemap is a basic part or SEO. In this post I will share how to create a XML sitemap for WordPress blog.

For all those people who don’t know about sitemap, a sitemap is a XML  file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL. Sitemaps are easiest way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. One advantage for creating sitemaps is that you can set priorities for different pages you want search engines to crawl.

If you are on WordPress then here is a plugin for you called Google XML Sitemaps which will easily generate a XML sitemap for your blog.

Google XML Sitemaps create a XML sitemap of your blog. It supports all the WordPress generated pages as well as custom ones. Everytime you edit or create a post, your sitemap is updated and all major search engines that support the sitemap protocol, like ASK.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO, are notified about the update.

In the plugin settings page, you can set priorities for different pages. You can also choose which of your blog’s pages to include in the sitemap. The plugin also allow you to create the sitemaps manually.

That is indeed a good plugin to use. I also log in via Gmail (settings page) and then check what has been indexed and if there are any issues. I have added my blog there so it gives me all the details about indexed files.
