Low Cost Tablet Sakshat to Launch This Month at Rs 1100

UPDATE: $35 tablet is now launched in India.

Saksham is a low-cost and world’s cheapest laptop which is priced at $35 or Rs. 1100. The device was launched last year by Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal. After crossing all the hurdles it is all set to launch by the end of this month.

According to the reports, in the first phase 10,000 units of Saksham will be made available to the students of IIT Rajasthan this month at a price of Rs. 1100. Over the next four months, 90,000 more units would be made available but at relatively higher price of Rs. 2200 ($49). The reason behind the higher price is that Government has cancelled the old tender and could not afford it at $35. But Government has announced that they will subsidize the cost by 50% and students can avail the tablet at Rs. 1100 only.

India’s low-cost tablet could be an answer to $100 laptops developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I hardly believe that the cost of Saksham would be Rs. 2200. But if the Government manage to provide laptops at this cost, it could be a boon for students.
